I'm from a working class background in Manchester and left the UK and a large family when I finished university and move to Australia. From a work perspective I spent most of my time working in and our technology and outsourcing in lots of different roles. These ranged from a business analyst, project manager, consultant, pre-sales consultant, partner director (in the US) and then responsible for market expansion into ASEAN. This role was via a startup that was launch approximately 5 years ago. Most of my experience is around contact centre technology/AI/ML and I'm not so much a technologist as CX person focused on technology. I'm now living in Singapore and have been here for two and a half years. I love the food, the melting pot of cultures and the food (did I mention the food?)

William Anthony
Occupation : Business owner / Director
Having been inducted through conventional post-graduate education in business at the University of Newcastle, Australia & having gone thru an unorthodox enterprise education at Excellerated Business Schools, Bali, Indonesia, my personal learning curve increased exponentially. Originally trained as an Accountant moved on to work as a sales director for an Italian consortium focusing on high-end fashion. Later migrated to director sales and marketing, for a US based seminar and training company, my exposure to training and entrepreneurship excellerated and also was responsible for sales and event management in Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. Having over 44 years of professional experience in the fields of corporate finance, management, sales and marketing was unhappy with the job environment and making ends meet.

Wealth predominantly belongs to the owner of a business, as a business is basically an asset. An asset puts money in your pocket while liability takes money out of your pocket. With this revelation, I tried building a start-up traditional business thrice but failed miserably.

I knew the only way to create wealth was to build a business and in October 2002, my nephew, a practising lawyer, introduced me to an e-commerce business. I was sceptical at first but did 3 months of research while pursuing my Masters of Business that helped me clarify and understand the differences between a traditional and non-traditional business. The research I collated was mind-boggling, as I found out that the e-commerce business was a growing industry. In the process, I stumbled upon my current mentor Kankan & Samina Bhattacharya from the US, New Jersey, retired in their 30s and they have been a blessing in my life for the past 18 years, coaching and mentoring me and my team. We are now paying it forward.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Not that I had major adversity or misfortune but there had been times where I had to make decisions or got thrown into situations that were less than desirable. In every scenario, I stick to my career resiliency framework – take a leap of faith, pick up new knowledge and skills even if it was the most boring role ever while at the same time looking out for better opportunities through my network. Throughout my 26-year career, there were several inflections points that shaped how I grow personally and professionally. I hope to share these experiences with others and at the same time learn from others.

I am based in Singapore, currently working as Operations Director for the sales organization in ACI Worldwide, a payments software company. In this role, there are 3 main responsibilities - Partner Operations, Market Expansion and Risk Officer Delegate with a common denominator of ensuring governance and compliance against corruption and bribery practices. As my role is global, I work from home and my nights are busier due to meetings with people in the US and Europe. Prior to ACI, I worked in Hewlett Packard for 11 years doing various roles in customer service and support. HP was the place where my career bloomed and ACI is the place where my career flourished thanks to investment I made getting mentors, coaches, and sponsors.

When I am not working, I enjoy cooking and baking, a skill that I picked up while working and living in the UK last 4 years. I am constantly looking for recipes that are not only easy to make but delicious and beautifully plated. I also try to exercise regularly, an area where I have low discipline and hired a trainer to keep my commitment!

I believe in empowerment of women as a society can grow only when women grow! Being a ‘feminist’ to me means being gender equal where there is no criteria of gender before choices are made while providing opportunities. Apart from this I always am concerned about “what world we would want to leave for our future generations - be it values, beliefs, culture or environment. I strive to make small contributions to make this world a better place in my own way.

In my current role as a global leader operations for 27 countries across central and Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Africa with Conservation International, I empower and influence cross-cultural teams to translate organizational effectiveness and operations excellence into actions by spearheading the development and implementation of a operations strategy that provides effective on-the-ground support. I have consistently demonstrated moving the organizational needle from ‘status quo’ to ‘building and driving high performing teams which has enabled the organization to maximize its social and environmental impact.

Earlier in my career, I pivoted from for-profit and consulting organizations to multinational not-for-profit organizations, which not only brought me more personal fulfilment but also empowered me to better human well-being around the world.

My exposure to a variety of cultures has allowed me to closely observe and understand them through their different values and beliefs. I intend to share these insights through my work, interactions, public speaking, and coaching.

More broadly, one of my core values as a professional and a person is giving. This could be giving through my finances, my experience, my time or through my actions. I truly believe that I am blessed to be in a position to give. I bring this giving philosophy into action not just through an impact-driven organization but also by sharing my learning, wisdom and experience with individuals, leaders, and executives through coaching.

My work keeps me on my toes, but I love decompressing with a glass of wine, a great book or long walks in nature.

Gerard Tan
Occupation : Professional

PROFILE OF GERARD TAN

The last four years have been particularly rewarding for me. I began teaching in a polytechnic in Singapore not long after retirement from corporate life in 2015. The specific areas I have taught are Communications in a Global Workplace, Marketing and Organizational Behavior. I have also found time for volunteer work in Singapore and other countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia and Ethopia.

Thirty-six years in corporate roles provided me many opportunities to experience and appreciate nuances in the concepts and theories of business and people management that are taught in academia. Consequently, I make every effort to illustrate and “bring to life” these concepts to those I teach, in order to make practical sense of them.

In addition, I had the benefit of working in 5 different locations across Asia and North America, 12 years of which were outside of Singapore. The experience of interacting and working with people from many cultures and managing global teams were invaluable.

Admittedly, I continue to have a passion for business endeavors and for sharing knowledge on business management I have acquired. My journey over several business cycles and especially during challenging periods, such as the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and the 2008 Global financial crisis, left indelible lessons for me.

I will be happy to provide a more detailed CV if required.
