Synopsis

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. Youth mental health issues have been on the rise, well before the onset of the pandemic, and continues unabated.

Data shows that:

  • > 50% youths (globally) were adversely impacted by the pandemic;

  • One in three young people in Singapore exhibit symptoms of mental health issues (up from 1 in 5 back in 2017, a huge jump largely due to the impact of the pandemic);

  • Nearly 60 per cent of youths in a Talking Point survey considered themselves lonely. Pervasive feeling of emptiness and loneliness inside. Loneliness is a major killer in modern society;

  • As much 27% of youths in Singapore harbor suicidal thoughts; more and more young people are engaging in self harm;

  • Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people age 10-29;

  • Many are pursuing lives and dreams that are not their own; we have addictions of all kinds - devices, social media, an always on instant gratification environment;

  • For many, life increasingly feels like a treadmill that they can’t get off, while others experience a growing sense of loneliness, isolation and disconnect despite living in an age of digital super-connectivity.

As parents and as a society, we find ourselves living in such a complex and volatile world - social media, rising cost of living, climate anxiety, polarized geopolitical situation, the pervasiveness of technology and the rapid encroachment of AI in every facet of our lives. Raising a child is becoming an increasingly more challenging task is an understatement. With the rising rate of youth mental health issues and youth suicides, more and more parents are at a loss of what they need to do as their children grow into teenagers and young adults.

And too often for young people, following your heart is deemed impractical by society, whereas it’s often exactly what leads to success and fulfillment - ever more important in the age of AI.

Join us in this dynamic fireside chat with our eclectic panel of speakers to explore this very important topic on raising creative, confident, resilient children. Our future depends on it!
