                              Synopsis

Parenting has never been easy. The widespread adoption of smartphones and the rise of social media are adding new challenges to parenthood. Parents with young children are anxious about the effects of screen time. How much is too much? And what impact will screens have on children’s development?

Technology and new media can be entertaining and educational. Yet, how can parents handle inappropriate content, online predators, or cyberbullying? What is the impact on social skills, creativity, gaming dependency, and at a deeper level, morals and values? Does the harm outweigh the benefit?

As parents, are we also struggling with spending too much time on social media and online games? Are our devices getting in the way of us spending quality time with our children?

Come join our panelists as they share their experiences and explore the dilemma of parenting in the digital age.

Jean Liu is an Assistant Professor of psychology at Yale-NUS College. Her research examines how advances in digital technology impact everyday outcomes, addressing questions such as: How much screen-time should adolescents have? Should we take out our phones during a party? Are restaurants right to ban food photography? Through this line of investigation, she hopes to document the good, bad, and neutral aspects of modern technology.

Across these activities, Jean keeps up with three little people, drinks too much Coke Zero, and finds herself interested in too many things.

Pauline Phoon is the founder of SOOS OIO LLP and COMEBACK PTE LTD
SOOS OIO LLP is a social enterprise that develops youth holistically through communities in our fast-evolving world. While SOOS OIO is gaining momentum in building communities among the gamers, the need for a deeper program for youths who have lost life balance in games became apparent. Deeply concerned about this rising trend, COMEBACK was started to provide professional help to gamers who experienced various disruptions in life due to game dependency.
Pauline co-authored an e-book titled “Understanding Games and Gamers” with Ruth Lim that is available for free download.

Ashokan Ramakrishnan heads the Smart Metering business at iWOW, an IoT technology provider that helps businesses uncover unconscious waste in their utility consumption. He is deeply concerned about climate change and believes that businesses must play a key part in creating a more sustainable future. In his spare time, he serves on the Executive Committee of the Mother Earth Toastmasters, a non-profit that helps eco-ambassadors hone their communication skills so that they can inspire communities to take climate action. He also serves as the Honorary Secretary of SPARK, a local charity that supports those with ADHD and their families thrive. And most recently, he was elected as the Honorary Treasurer of A GOOD SPACE, which is Singapore’s first and only cooperative for changemakers and social entrepreneurs. But the role that he is most passionate about, is that of a parent. This is the role that he was least prepared for and the one that he has grown the most in.
